  • 29th Annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals event

Center Line, Mich. — The longest running sponsorship in the NHRA will continue this weekend when the 29th Annual Mopar® Mile-High Nationals blast off at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo., on July 11-13.

A vast lineup of NHRA Funny Car, Pro Stock and sportsman racers will represent Team Mopar at Bandimere’s Thunder Mountain. Allen Johnson, Mopar’s factory-backed Pro Stock pilot, won the 2007 Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals and will look to defend his event title, as will Jack Beckman, who claimed the 2007 Funny Car class win with Mopar HEMI® power.

Mopar will also acknowledge two legendary drag racers whose accomplishments while competing with Mopar power helped to build the brand’s storied motorsports heritage. Don “Big Daddy” Garlits will serve as Grand Marshal of the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals, with Judy “Miss Mighty Mopar” Lilly taking the role of Honorary Starter.

Garlits is known as the greatest drag racer of all time—a title made fact by the NHRA in 2001, when he was named number one of the Top 50 drivers from the NHRA’s first 50 years. He racked up the majority of his 144 national event wins, eight U.S. Nationals championships and 17 World Championship titles while competing with a Mopar power plant. Lilly is recognized as one of the female trailblazers in the sport of drag racing and was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 1998.

“Mopar is thrilled to return as title sponsor of the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals,” said ???. “Mopar’s long partnership with the NHRA and the team at Bandimere Speedway has made the Mile-High race the premier event for Mopar and its legion of fans. This year we’re bringing together drivers that carried the Mopar banner to success in the past, such as Don Garlits and Judy Lilly, with our HEMI-powered stars of today. These drivers demonstrate that the performance and reliability of Mopar parts has spawned success on the quarter-mile for generations of racers, from the past to the present day.”

“Bandimere Speedway is honored to celebrate our 50th anniversary season with Mopar continuing in its role as sponsor of the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals,” said John Bandimere, Jr. “We are thankful of the long-standing relationship we have with all of the people at Chrysler, and proud to be the ‘Home Track’ for Team Mopar.”

70 Years of Mopar

When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.

Originally used in the 1920s, Mopar (a simple contraction of the words MOtor and PARts) was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It was also widely used as a moniker for the CMPC. The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s – the muscle car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth “package cars” equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of “Special Parts” for super stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division called Mopar Performance Parts to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.

Today, Chrysler LLC’s Global Service & Parts division is responsible for the manufacturing and distribution of nearly 250,000 authentic Mopar replacement parts, components and accessories for Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge vehicles sold around the world. To assure quality, reliability and durability, all Mopar parts and accessories are designed in strict adherence to Chrysler Engineering standards.
